Our pragmatic solutions to gas, grocery inflation rejected by government
Families, seniors, small businesses and everyone across Flamborough and Glanbrook continue to face the same cost of living crisis that all Canadians are enduring. It has spun further out of control in the past month. The price of gas is now consistently over $2 per litre and forecast to go higher over the summer.
Cost of living is the number one issue in Canada and it does not live and die with gas, however. On average, the cost of groceries for everyday Canadians has gone up by an average of 9.7%! This is the highest food inflation we’ve seen since 1981 – four decades ago. The Opposition has been speaking about this cost of living crisis every day in the House of Commons. Earlier this month, I spoke in Parliament about how the cost of living is impacting residents of Flamborough-Glanbrook from what you told me directly.
However, we can’t identify problems without offering solutions. That’s why, my Conservative colleagues and I put forward a motion earlier this month to temporarily suspend the GST on gas and fuel, immediately remove federal COVID-19 restrictions that are chocking the economy and adding costs everywhere, suspend the carbon tax, eliminate the fertilizer tariffs and launch a public inquiry into money laundering in housing.
All pragmatic, doable actions that would bring immediate relief to Canadians. The Liberals and NDP voted it down! It wasn’t the first time – similar motions we have proposed for months have met with similar results. Despite this, we will not stop proposing solutions and fighting for you.
Turning to a happier note, Canada Day is upon us. It’s wonderful that that our great local Canada Day events are back in full force and in-person! It has been a few years since some of these events have taken place. Be sure to check out the delicious Oh Canada Rotary Ribfest at Waterdown’s Memorial Park from July 1st to 3rd. I have a booth there, please stop by to say hello. Also, the fantastic Lynden Canada Day parade kicks off at 3:00pm on July 1st and there are Fireworks for the Binbrook and Glanbrook communities at Southbrook Golf Course on the evening of July 1st. I’m proud to be a sponsor of the Lynden and Binbrook celebrations.
Best wishes for a Happy Canada Day!
